How to calculate Zakat on your annual assessment date

Start with the wealth you own on your Zakat date, rather than your annual salary. Enter cash and bank balances, eligible gold and silver at their current value, the Zakatable part of investments, business stock held for sale, and recoverable money owed to you. Put each amount in one category so you do not count it twice.

Enter only liabilities that your chosen scholarly guidance allows you to deduct. Select a nisab convention, enter the current pure-metal price per gram in the same currency as your assets, and confirm whether the relevant lunar-year condition has been met. The calculator then shows the arithmetic; it does not determine your religious circumstances.

Nisab standards, gold prices and silver prices

Nisab is an eligibility threshold. This tool offers the 87.48 g gold and 612.36 g silver values used by Islamic Relief, alongside the 85 g and 595 g conventions used in other guidance. A custom amount is available when your trusted scholar or local organisation gives you a different threshold.

Prices are entered by you and are not a live market feed. Gold prices should refer to pure gold, and silver prices to pure silver. When entering the value of jewellery, account for purity and valuation according to the guidance you follow. The tool does not automatically convert carats, tolas or ounces.

Which assets and liabilities belong in the calculation?

A salary that has already been spent is different from money remaining in savings. Personal household belongings and a home used for living are not entered as business inventory here. A property held for sale, investment portfolio or pension may need a more specific assessment before you decide the value to enter.

Do not automatically deduct an entire long-term mortgage or future household costs. Debt treatment, jewellery, shares and pensions can differ by school and circumstances. Use an agreed method consistently and keep a record of the values used.

Zakat formula and a worked example

Net eligible wealth = eligible assets − permitted liabilities, with a minimum of zero. If the net wealth reaches the selected nisab and the relevant hawl condition is confirmed, estimated Zakat = net eligible wealth × 0.025. The nisab is not subtracted before applying 2.5%.

For a fictional example, assets of 20,000 and permitted liabilities of 2,000 give net wealth of 18,000. With a threshold of 5,000 and the lunar-year condition met, the estimate is 450. These example amounts are not today’s gold price or a published nisab.

When the estimate is zero or differs from another calculator

A zero result can mean your wealth is below the threshold, the entered liabilities exceed your eligible assets, or you have not confirmed the lunar-year condition. Check the explanation beside the result before treating it as a conclusion.

Different thresholds, valuation dates, debt deductions and investment methods can explain different answers. This personal wealth calculator does not cover livestock, agricultural produce, minerals or Zakat al-Fitr. It also does not model every change in wealth during the year.

Zakat calculator FAQs

Can I use dollars, pounds or rupees? Yes. Keep all values, including the metal price, in one currency. Can I choose gold instead of silver? Both options are available; follow the guidance appropriate to your assets and circumstances. Do I still need advice? Yes, where asset eligibility or religious obligations are uncertain.
