Guide updated 6 October 2026
Count Monday-to-Friday days between two dates, with an optional list of dates to exclude. This business days calculator is useful for a project timetable, a delivery estimate or checking the length of a work period. It uses a fixed weekend and your own holiday list.
How to calculate business days between dates
- Select the start and end dates. The end must be on or after the start.
- Choose whether the start date should count.
- Enter holidays or closure dates in YYYY-MM-DD format, separated by commas or whitespace.
- Select Calculate and check the business-day total and excluded holiday count.
The end date always counts if it is a weekday and is not in your exclusion list. The tool does not automatically select a country, state, province or territory calendar.
Business days versus calendar days
Calendar days include every day in the range. This tool treats Monday through Friday as potential business days, then removes listed closure dates. Saturdays and Sundays are skipped even if your workplace normally opens on them.
That fixed definition makes the result easy to reproduce, but it may not match a contract or service that operates on a different schedule. Read the relevant deadline or delivery terms before treating the count as an official date calculation.
Should the start date be included?
Two calculators can disagree simply because they use different endpoint conventions. Here, you control the start date and the end is included. A Monday-to-Friday range contains five business days when both endpoints count, or four when the start Monday is excluded.
When start and end are the same weekday, the result is one if the start counts and zero if it does not. A weekend or excluded holiday does not count either way. Use this same-day check when confirming the convention.
How to exclude holidays and office closures
Enter a date such as 2026-10-14, not a holiday name. Repeated dates do not subtract repeatedly. A holiday that falls on Saturday or Sunday also does not subtract again because the weekend day was already skipped.
For the USA, UK, Canada, Australia or Germany, obtain the dates for the relevant year and locality from the appropriate calendar. Add any observed substitute date or company closure separately when it applies to your schedule. The calculator cannot infer those dates from the country name.
Example: one week with a closure
| Range and settings | Business days |
|---|---|
| 12–16 October 2026; start included; no closures | 5 |
| Same range; start excluded | 4 |
| Start included; exclude 2026-10-14 | 4 |
The excluded holiday count shows weekday dates removed from the selected interval, not every date entered in the text box.
Use the result for planning, with the right limits
Use the total to estimate available weekdays in a project window or compare a proposed schedule with a work calendar. This version counts days between existing dates. It does not find a future date by adding ten business days, calculate hours or adjust weekend patterns.
Ranges longer than 36,600 days are rejected. The dates are processed as whole calendar dates, so a time of day or delivery cut-off is not part of the result. Check closure-date formatting if the total appears too high.
