Calculate a percentage grade from points
Enter the points you earned and the maximum points available. Select Calculate to see the percentage. For 43 points out of 50, the calculation is 43 ÷ 50 × 100 = 86%. Decimal point values are accepted.
The points section expects an earned score that does not exceed the maximum. Extra-credit systems need a separate rule and are not modeled here. The tool does not assign a letter grade, because percentage cutoffs vary across schools and courses.
How to use the final exam grade planner
The optional planner needs your current course grade, your target overall grade and the final exam’s percentage weight. Enter all three as percentages from 0 to 100, with a final weight greater than zero. Leave all three blank when you only want a points percentage.
Your current grade must describe the average of the non-final portion of the course. Do not enter a displayed grade that already counts the uncompleted final as zero unless you first correct it to the appropriate current average.
Final grade formula and a worked example
If C is the current average, T the target and w the final’s weight as a decimal, required final score = [T − C × (1 − w)] ÷ w. A current grade of 82%, a target of 85% and a final worth 30% require 92% on the final.
The final score is calculated independently of the points conversion above. When a final is the whole course, its weight is 100% and the needed score equals the target. A weight of zero cannot be used because there is no remaining component to change the grade.
Understand an impossible or already secured target
A needed result above 100% means the target cannot be reached under this model without extra credit or a policy change. A result at or below zero means the target is already secured even with a zero on the final, assuming no additional minimum-score rule applies.
Some courses require passing the final independently, completing every assessment or meeting attendance requirements. The calculator does not override those conditions. It describes the arithmetic, not whether a course is officially passed.
Points, weighted grades and GPA are different
A points percentage describes earned points divided by available points. A weighted grade combines assessment categories using course weights. GPA combines grade points across courses, usually weighted by credits. These quantities answer different questions.
Use our Weighted Grade Calculator when several categories have their own weights, and our GPA Calculator when you need a semester or cumulative credit-weighted average. Check the syllabus before selecting the model.
Why your calculated grade differs from the gradebook
Look for excluded assignments, dropped lowest scores, rounding policies, late penalties and ungraded work. A points-based course and a category-weighted course can produce different averages even when they contain the same assignment scores.
This version displays two decimal places. Keep full precision when applying an institution’s official rule; a displayed 89.99% does not become an A unless the course policy says so.
Grade calculator FAQs
Can I enter 8 out of 10? Yes, enter 8 earned and 10 possible to get 80%. Does it convert a percentage to a US letter grade? No; use your own published cutoffs.
Can the final planner handle multiple remaining assessments? Only if you combine them into a single remaining component with an agreed total weight and interpret the result as its needed average. Otherwise use the weighted tool.
