Guide updated 6 October 2026

Calculate a weighted course average from assessment scores and percentage weights. You can also enter a target grade to estimate the average needed on the remaining portion of the course. The result depends on your inputs, not on a school’s grading rules.

How to use the weighted grade calculator

  1. Enter a score percentage and its course weight in each completed row.
  2. Use percentages from 0 to 100 for scores and positive percentage weights. Leave both fields blank in unused rows.
  3. Keep the total entered weight at or below 100%.
  4. Optionally enter a target percentage, then calculate.

The current tool has five rows. Convert a mark such as 18 out of 20 to 90% before entering it. Do not mix raw marks, scores out of ten and percentage scores in the same calculation.

Weighted average formula and a worked example

Weighted average = sum of (score × weight) ÷ sum of entered weights. A component with a larger weight contributes more to the result than one with a smaller weight.

AssessmentScoreWeightScore × weight
Coursework88%30%2,640
Project76%20%1,520
Exam82%50%4,100

The sum is 8,260 and the total weight is 100, so the course average is 82.60%. An ordinary average would give each assessment the same influence, which is not appropriate when the syllabus assigns different weights.

What if the weights do not add up to 100%?

When the entered weights total less than 100%, the displayed average is normalized over the completed portion. It is not a final grade with every remaining assessment counted as zero.

For example, 90% on a component worth 20% and 80% on one worth 30% give a completed-work average of 84%. Their contribution to the full course is 42 percentage points, and 50% of the course remains.

What grade do you need on the remaining work?

Required remaining average = (target × 100 − sum of score × weight) ÷ remaining weight. The remaining weight is 100 minus the total entered weight.

In the previous example, a target of 85% requires (8,500 − 4,200) ÷ 50 = 86% across the remaining half of the course. If several assessments remain, this is their combined weighted average, not necessarily the mark required on each one.

A required percentage over 100 is outside the supported score range. A result below zero means the entered contribution already exceeds the target mathematically, but minimum exam scores and completion rules can still apply.

Course rules this calculator does not apply

Check the syllabus for minimum exam marks, dropped assignments, category-specific calculations, resits, extra credit, caps and rounding. This tool does not translate letter grades, calculate GPA or decide whether you pass.

The displayed average is rounded to two decimal places. Your course may round at another stage or use unrounded component results. If you have more than five assessments, only combine them into categories when the course’s weighting scheme supports that approach.

Fix common score and weight errors

Use 25 for a 25% weight, not 0.25. Do not enter “25” as the score for an assessment marked out of 30 without first converting it to a percentage. Complete both fields in any row you use. A zero score is valid; a zero or negative weight is not.

When weights exceed 100%, review whether you copied both a category total and its individual assignments. Counting the same contribution twice makes the average misleading.

Weighted grade calculator FAQs

Can I use scores out of ten?

Convert them to percentages first: 7.5 out of 10 becomes 75%.

Does a partial average include future work as zero?

No. It is normalized over the entered weights.

Can the target be for more than one remaining exam?

Yes, but the result is the average needed across all remaining weight.

What if all 100% is already entered?

The overall average is calculated, but there is no remaining portion for a target calculation.

Is this my official final grade?

No. Confirm weights and course rules with your school or instructor.
