Guide updated 6 October 2026
Paste or type your text to count words and characters and estimate reading time. The numbers update as you edit, so you can check a draft against a word limit without submitting it anywhere. This is a focused counter, not a grammar checker or document editor.
How to count words online
- Copy the text you want to measure and paste it into the box above.
- Read the word total, characters including spaces, and estimated reading minutes.
- Edit the text and watch the counts update.
- Check the final version against the limit set by your teacher, editor or form.
Paste the portion that should count. If a submission excludes references or headings, leave those out rather than counting the entire document and assuming every part is included.
What counts as a word in this tool?
The counter trims whitespace at the beginning and end, then treats each remaining whitespace-separated group as one word. Spaces, tabs and line breaks separate groups. Repeated spaces do not create extra words.
A hyphenated expression without spaces is one group. A number is also a group. Punctuation attached to a word does not add another group, but a stand-alone symbol between spaces can count as one. This simple rule is reproducible, though it does not match every editorial definition of a word.
Word count and character count are different limits
A word limit controls the number of groups in the text. A character limit controls its length more directly. The character total here includes spaces, punctuation, tabs and line breaks, including whitespace at the edges of the box.
The tool counts Unicode code points rather than visual symbols. Some emoji or accented character sequences can contain several code points even when they look like one symbol. A platform that counts bytes, UTF-16 units or visible graphemes may therefore show a different total.
How the estimated reading time works
Reading time uses a fixed assumption of 200 words per minute and rounds any non-empty result up to the next whole minute. A 450-word passage displays three minutes; an empty box displays zero.
That is a planning estimate, not a measured reading speed. Technical language, unfamiliar vocabulary and careful proofreading can take longer. A speech or presentation should be timed aloud rather than estimated from the reading figure.
Examples of words and characters
| Text | Words | Characters |
|---|---|---|
| Clear writing. | 2 | 14 including the space and full stop |
| well-known | 1 | 10 |
| one two | 2 | 7 |
Adding an extra space between “one” and “two” raises the character total but leaves the word total at two.
When to use a word counter
Use it before submitting an assignment, sending a limited-length application answer, preparing a product description or handing a draft to an editor. It is also useful for estimating whether an article is short enough for the time available.
Do not substitute an assumed universal limit for the actual instructions. Platforms and assignments set their own rules about headings, references, footnotes and character counting. A counter checks length; it does not decide whether the writing answers the question well.
Why Word, Google Docs or a form may disagree
Programs can treat hyphens, symbols, numbers and document sections differently. Copy only the intended text and look for extra line breaks introduced by copying from a PDF. For a strict submission, the receiving system’s count or published rule is the one to check.
Your text is counted in the browser by this tool. It does not save a document, import files, check grammar, calculate keyword density or recover a draft after you close the page. Keep your main copy elsewhere.
